Votes for Women

On Nov. 10, we hosted a special film screening and discussion with filmmaker Martha Wheelock ’59 about the 87-year history of women’s right to vote.

In celebration of the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment, on Tuesday, November 10, Miss Hall’s alumnae, family, and friends came together to watch the short film Inez Milholland: Forward Into Light. This Zoom screening followed by a conversation with the film’s producer, accomplished writer, and director Martha Wheelock ’59.

Inez Milholland was a labor lawyer, war correspondent, and the campaigner for women’s rights who led the dramatic Woman Suffrage Procession on horseback in advance of President Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. Her convictions were many. In addition to her work as a suffragist, she was a pacifist, was interested in prison reform, and worked for equality for African Americans.

Miss Hall’s Head of School Julia Heaton framed the discussion between filmmaker Martha Wheelock and MHS Trustee and Treasurer of the Board of the National Women’s History Museum Susan Danish about the generations-long history of suffrage and the importance of knowing women’s history.
